Six Speed lights & a pocket wizard

Two speedlights lit the cardboard backdrop and reflected light back onto the subject; 3 were set up above and below the feeder and between the camera and the subject at different angles and the last speedlight was placed slightly under and behind the hummingbird.

I pre-focused on the flower and waited – I composed the shot and cropped out the hummingbird feeder which is just to the right of the frame where you can’t see it. The feeder was critical to draw the hummingbirds (the bees came on their own) – additionally, I squirted a little sugar water on the red flower so the hummingbirds would hopefully stop at the flower and not go on to the feeder.

The bee between the hummer and the flower was added in PS from an image I had taken about a minute earlier
