Wanting to go to Bosque later this week. Would like comments on anyone who has been there this year. The bird counts, per the Friends of Bosque web site, appear to be very low. Also have the cornfields near the road been cut down?
Thanks

corn failed and the ponds were never mowed. IF you've never been to Bosque, it's good. If you've been here and you know how good it can be, it's a 5 on a scale of 1-10. I'm here now - just had a spectacular sunset - if it wasn't for the color, very average.

I have recent Bosque pictures posted at www.flickr.com/photos/hammond_tammy, taken between Nov. 23 - 27. Gorgeous sunrise without birds was not what I was after but breathtaking anyway. Two days in a row thousands of birds were flying out before sunrise (in distance) but headed away from the refuge. Crane numbers were very low although still some activity so depends on what you’re after.
The refuge light goose hunting dates this month are Dec. 14, 16, 18.

Sam- I made my 3rd trip to Bosque last week. Would have to agree with Russ on the Crane count being low. Plenty of snow geese for my taste though. Sunrise and sunsets very good. Also agree with Tammy- depends what you are after. I came away with some of my best shots this year. I did spend 3 days (all day) in the refuge while others went back to town for breakfast and a nap after sunrise. There is one Leucistic crane at the refuge which I saw this year.
