MHWPC is non-political, and will not get involved in such issues. Members, however, PARTICULARLY THOSE LIVING IN LAKEWOOD, may choose to take action.
A 412 unit upscale apartment complex with 542 internal parking spaces has been proposed and tentatively approved in the current location of the empty office building and parking lot just east of Belmar Park. The development would require removal of many trees and would actually use some land inside the current park. Lakewood plans to make other related “improvements” to the park itself that would further reduce the total relatively natural area. Simply the amount of pressure put on the park by this huge additional number of people is likely to degrade the habitat there.
A group is planning to present their concerns at the 7pm Monday August 11th Lakewood City Council Meeting. If you have concerns about Belmar Park but don’t wish to go to the City Council Meeting, there are a number of other actions you could take before this proposal is a done deal. In either case, please call me at 303-759-4056 if you would like more information and/or if you would like to be put in touch with the group working on this issue.

Thank you, Nancy, for this information; I had no idea. That definitely does not sound good. Belmar is such a gem; it would be a shame.
Did you mean 7 pm September 11th will be the City Council Meeting? (you wrote August). And will you be part of the group presenting? I will call you about what actions can be taken.
