The aspen are great south of Aspen along Castle Creek road up around Ashcroft. They are not yet at the peak as there are lots of trees still green or partially turning. There are, however, some nice stands of solid yellow and even some orange to provide interesting compositions.
A local predicts that Maroon Bells will be near peak this weekend.
I'll try to keep you posted.

Thanks James.
I'm down in Ridgway/Telluride. The trees are only about 25% changed at this time. The scrub oak is getting more red. This weekend will be good, not great. Next weekend should be much better. The high temps, are slowing down the trees. The good news is the mountain biking is awesome !!!

We checked out Maroon Bells this afternoon, and they look great. The ranger at the entrance thought the trees might peak on Sunday. This weekend will be a good time to shoot there and throughout the Aspen area.

The Bells from Maroon Lake were still good this morning, with some areas of green left and no bare trees yet down in the valley. It should be good for another few days.
The area around Crater Lake was still good this morning, but it has peaked. There are some trees with falling leaves. The lake is low, but there's plenty of water to get good reflections. That is, if you don't mind a thin layer of ice in spots on the Bells side of the lake. Get there soon if you want to shoot it this year.
We're heading down towards Kebler today and will try to report back.
